Dr. Norman R. Weldon Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Student Summer Research Internship

The FIU Biomedical Engineering Department has established an award for undergraduate students to participate in faculty research during the summer. The awards are intended to support students with an interest in pursuing a career in research with plans to attend graduate studies in biomedical engineering.

Students will be selected to conduct research in a faculty’s laboratory for 20 hr/week for 10 weeks at $14/hour over the summer (May 12 – July 18). Students must apply with a BME faculty mentor.

Students are required to write a project report and present their research at the Undergraduate Research Day poster session in Fall (unless they graduate in Summer).

Eligibility and Application Details

• Must be an undergraduate BME student with a minimum 3.0 GPA
• Must have a BME faculty mentor for your project
• Must submit a current version of your resume
• Must submit a 3-page written project proposal
• Must submit unofficial transcripts
• Must present your proposal the week of May 6th

Applications will be judged and ranked according to the following criteria.
• Qualifications of the applicant
• Project relevance to the area of biomedical research
• Significance and future potential for the development of the research
• Originality and innovativeness of the proposed project
• Quality (spelling, grammar, language, etc.) and completeness of the application
• Availability of adequate resources to complete the project
• Winners will be notified on 3/31/2025 via email

• Abstract – No more than 250 words. The project abstract should contain a statement of objectives, methods to be employed, and the biomedical significance of the proposed research.
• Project Description – 3 pages, single-spaced, using 12-point font. In the project description, you should specify the research hypothesis and the specific aims designed to test the hypothesis. Additionally, the project description should include the following elements: background information, significance of the study, research methods and design for each specific aim, and a timeline and work plan.
• Bibliography (One page)
• Letter of Recommendation – This letter should be from the mentor who will confirm the applicant’s participation in the proposed project and provide research supervision throughout the award period.
